JULIA CAROLIN KOTHE
New website coming soon...
Julia Carolin Kothe works at the intersection of sculpture, installation, sound, writing and performance. In her sculptural installations and spatial interventions, she explores the connections, discrepancies and tensions of temporal and spatial settings. She is interested in systems of communication between the gestural and the verbal, the physical and the digital, the situational and the auto-generated, the human and non-human, including the relationships that materialise in space and in-between bodies.
Her practice evolves in non-linear acts based on research that incorporates elements of personal and collective memory, feminist theory and archival material, with the aim of revisiting and repositioning events that respond to particular conditions of spaces and the bodies within them. The processual nature of her practice breaks away from the notion of a singular, finished work and leads to site specific and contextual modes of display. Her work offers the spectator a spatial, atmospheric, physical experience that constantly recreates itself and casts an unforeseen light on particular environments.
Julia Carolin Kothe (*Gießen, D) is a visual artist based between Glasgow, UK and Frankfurt am Main, D. She completed two Master with distinction from the Glasgow School of Art and Kunsthochschule Mainz respectively. Julia is a studio holder at the Glasgow Sculpture Studios.
Recent works have been shown at Neuer Kunstverein Mittelrhein (2023, Neuwied), French Street (2023, Glasgow), Rosa Stern (2022, Munich), Kunsthalle Mainz (2021), Queens Street Studios (2021, Belfast), POKY - Institute of Contemporary Art (2020, Mainz), ATLETIKA Gallery (2020, Vilnius), mañana bold (2019, Offenbach/Main) and Frankfurter Kunstverein (2018), among others.
She has participated in several residencies, including the Creative Lab Residency (Centre for Contemporary Arts Glasgow, 2023), the Glenkeen Garden Residency of the Crespo Foundation (Frankfurt am Main and West Cork/Ireland, 2023), the Hospitalfield Graduate Programme (Arbroath, 2021/22) and is a fellow of the Stiftung Kunstfonds (working grant 2022/23). She is currently a committee member of Market Gallery (Glasgow, UK), co-founder of the Kunstverein ruelle e.V. (Mainz, DE), the Orga Orga collective (Mainz, DE) and the PUTPUT collective (projects in public space). Here she has been working as a curator and art facilitator for exhibitions, symposia, art and performance festivals since 2015.
Yulia (the acoustic and performative echo of Julia Carolin Kothe) is curious about collaborative ways of working that lead to radio episodes, sound works, texts and publications on both physical and digital platforms.
